To see Oregon coast folk art in the making, visit the Oregon Connection (1125 S. 1st St., Coos Bay, 541/267-7804, 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 11 a.m.–4 p.m.Sun.), just off U.S. 101 at the south end of Coos Bay. The myrtlewood factory tour shows you how a myrtlewood log gets fashioned into bowls, clocks, tables, and other utensils. No admission is charged for this 25-minute guided run through a working factory. After you’re done, the store is a delight, with Oregon gourmet foods and crafts supplementing the quality woodwork.
Five miles north of North Bend, The Real Oregon Gift (3955 U.S. 101, 541/756-2220) is another large myrtlewood factory and showroom.
