Roseburg’s big event is the Douglas County Fair, held annually at the fairgrounds (Exit 123 off I-5) the second week of August, with down-home events like 4-H livestock competitions, midway rides, food booths, and horse and stock-car races. Contact the Roseburg Visitors and Convention Bureau (410 SE Spruce St., 541/672-9731 or 800/444-9584, www.visitroseburg.com) for specifics.
If you happen to be in Roseburg on a summer Tuesday evening, check out Music on the Halfshell (www.halfshell.org), a series of outdoor summer concerts held at the band shell in Stewart Park (NW Stewart Pkwy. and NW Harvey Ave.). The free concerts have featured a surprisingly high level of national and international stars such as David Grisman, B. B. King, and Vieux Farka Touré. The park’s bandstand is located near the banks of the South Umpqua River.
