Fishing

The North Umpqua has several distinctions. First, it is known as one of the most difficult North American rivers to fish. No boats are permitted for 15 miles in either direction of Steamboat, and no bait or spinners are allowed either. This puts a premium on skillful fly-fishing. You can wade on in and poke around for the best fishing holes on the North Umpqua, one of the few rivers with a summer run of native steelhead—or better yet, hire a guide.

Larry’s Guide Service (12736 N. Umpqua Hwy., Roseburg, 541/673-3099 or 800/763-6277, www.oregonguides.com) can help you get out on the river year-round to fish for salmon, steelhead, and striped bass. The drift boats are large and heated; bait, tackle, and safety equipment are all provided. Rates are $350 for two people.
