Six miles west of Corvallis on Route 34 is the town of Philomath, home to the Benton County Historical Society (1101 Main St., Philomath, 541/929-6230, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Tues.–Sat., free). Looms, carriages, printing presses, and other pioneer-history exhibits are mildly diverting, but the real star is the 1867 Georgian-style brick structure housing the collection. Just look for the imposing building on the right side of the highway as you head toward the coast.
