Restaurante y Cafetería El Trapiche (Vía Argentina, tel. 269-2063, tel. 269-4353 for takeout orders, 7 a.m.–11 p.m., daily, US$4–9) has long been a local favorite for traditional Panamanian fare such as mondongo (tripe), hojaldres (frybread), tortillas, tamales, and ropa vieja (shredded beef with rice). Those who want to sample a variety of things can go for the “típico platter” (US$11).
Breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m. and includes such hearty fare as a scrambled eggs, steak, white cheese, and carimañola (a fried, meat-stuffed roll) for around US$5. There’s an air-conditioned interior as well as seating outside on Vía Argentina.
