The red tile–roofed Hotel La Mejorana (tel. 994-5794, fax 994-5796, US$12.10 s, US$14.30 d small rooms, US$22 s/d larger rooms) is lovingly decorated with Guararé’s role as a folkloric center in mind. The walls of the common areas are adorned with devil masks, sketches of women in polleras, paintings of sugarcane presses—all the traditional touchstones. Its 22 rooms are much simpler and dark, with tiny windows, but they’re clean and pleasant enough, with pretty good beds, hot-water bathrooms, air-conditioning, local TV, and telephones. Reserve 2–3 months in advance for all festivals.
The cheerful open-air restaurant at the hotel serves most of the usuals, but it also offers a surprisingly extensive seafood selection. Most main dishes are US$10 or less.
