Though it’s not as cold around Boquete as it is in the higher elevations on the west side of Barú, it can still get plenty chilly. As always in the highlands, campers should bring plenty of warm, waterproof clothing and a waterproof tent if planning to camp. Expect drizzle even in the dry season.
Camping is possible in Parque Nacional Volcán Barú, but those who pitch their tents high up should be prepared for weather that can approach freezing. Also, the elevation is high enough that altitude sickness is a possibility. If you feel nauseated or get a bad headache, head down the mountain immediately. It will only get worse.
Be sure also to bring plenty of water; there are no facilities in the park itself. Campers can get a camping permit from the ranger station at the start of the Volcán Barú summit trail. Camping permits are US$5, plus the US$5 park entrance fee.
It’s also possible to camp at the ANAM ranger station at Alto Chiquero, the Boquete-side end of the Sendero Los Quetzales. The station has two dorm rooms upstairs, each of which has four bunk beds and lockers for storing gear. There’s also a kitchenette. The cost is US$5 per bed. Parking is US$1.
