Medical Travel Insurance
Most medical insurance will not cover you while traveling abroad, so most Peru travelers buy overseas medical insurance. Go with a reputable insurance company, or you will have trouble collecting claims. Nearly all Peru hospitals will make you pay up front, and then it’s up to you to submit your claim.
Some U.S.-based companies that have been recommended by travelers include Medex Assistance (tel. 800/732-5309, www.medexassist.com), Travel Assistance International (tel. 800/237-2828, www.travelassistance.com), Health Care Global by Wallach and Company Inc. (tel. 800/237-6615, www.wallach.com), and International Medical Group (tel. 800/628-4664, www.imglobal.com). Students can get insurance through the STA (tel. 800/226-8624, www.statravel.com).
Some companies sell additional riders to cover high-risk sports such as mountain climbing with a rope, paragliding, and bungee jumping. One good company is Specialty Risk International (tel. 800/335-0611, www.specialtyrisk.com), which insures for as little as three months. Membership with the American Alpine Club (tel. 303/384-0111, www.americanalpineclub.org) is open to anyone who has climbed in the last two years and includes rescue and evacuation for mountain climbers around the world.
