Westin
Trip Ideas
99 S. 17th St., 215/563-1600,
With rooms starting at around $339 a night, this deluxe chain in the heart of the downtown business and shopping district is a top choice for business travelers with expense accounts. With clean lines and colors, the rooms and common areas are sleek, stylish, and modern.
The 290 guest rooms and 17 suites have all the luxury amenities, but the greatest amenity of all is their signature Heavenly Bed—it is, quite simply, the most comfortable bed in the world. The room decor is soothing but fairly unremarkable, with the exception of room 414, also called the “uwishunu” room.
A joint effort of the Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation and numerous local artists and designers, the one-of-a-kind room is both funky and beautiful. Local artists created everything from the light fixtures to the drawer pulls. The crowning jewel is a full wall mural behind the bed courtesy of the Mural Arts Program.
Some items in the room are available for purchase, and rotating items mean that the room is an evolving art project. Call ahead for a chance to sleep amid the fantastic art, and don’t worry—it still has the Westin trademark Heavenly Bed.
