Run out of a small storefront just a block from the Italian Market, this classic South Philly luncheonette has a unique old-school charm and some of the city’s best lunch fare.
In addition to the cheesesteaks and hot and cold hoagies, try the chicken cutlet or pork sandwich—either one with the signature broccoli rabe or sharp provolone on top. A classic roast beef sandwich drenched in gravy, spicy sausage-and-pepper sandwich, hearty soups, traditional breakfast fare, and egg-and-cheese sandwiches are also favorites.
Shank’s and Evelyn’s is a family-run business and the service is quick. There isn’t a lot of small talk unless you’re a regular, but they’re perfectly friendly as long as you are.
As of late 2007, the restaurant started serving dinners, as it did in its early years. The verdict is not yet out, but if the dinner fare in any way compares to the breakfast and lunch menu, it is sure to be a hit. Cash only.
