Germantown Avenue
Trip Ideas
One of two shopping areas in the northwest section of Philadelphia (Main Street in Manayunk is the other one), Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill is referred to as “the Avenue” by locals. The only business district in a largely residential area, it feels like Main Street in a small town with its quaint storefronts, Victorian lampposts, cobblestone streets, and shoppers who stop to chat with one another.
While selections are varied, you can find a good dose of antiques, upscale home goods, several art galleries, spas, and clothing and jewelry shops.
More people from the surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs than from Center City frequent these shops, although a few of the unique art, antiques, and furniture stores draw the downtown sect.
