Operated by National Park Services, Independence National Historical Park is devoted to telling the history of American independence and democracy. Plenty of interesting sights and historic buildings are located within close proximity, and they are all free with the exception of the Constitution Center.

Your visit to the area should start at the Independence Visitor Center, and if you’re here March–December this is where you’ll need to pick up a free timed-entrance ticket to Independence Hall. Be sure to arrive before noon in the busy summer months or call or go online to reserve your Independence Hall tickets (800/967-2283, http://www.nps.gov/inde/independence-hall.htm).

At the Visitor Center you can also reserve a ticket for a free tour of the Todd House and the Bishop White House.

This compact area is easily traversed on foot, but if you prefer, the Historic Philadelphia Trolley Loop runs 10 a.m.–6:30 p.m. in late May–September. It makes 10 stops throughout Old City, including Franklin Square, the Liberty Bell Center, and Penn’s Landing, and offers continuous service every 15 minutes. An all-day pass is $2.
