Two classic Native American trading posts can be found in Oak Creek Canyon. Step inside Garland’s Indian Jewelry (3953 N. Highway 89A, 928/282-6632, www.garlandsjewelry.com, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily), and you’ll see walls of intricately crafted silver-and-leather belts, woven baskets, kachina dolls, and jewelry. The designs lean toward the traditional, though you’ll find some impressively modern pieces like chunky bracelets inlaid with colorful stones and necklaces with simple patterns made of turquoise. The store sells antique pieces as well as new designs by emerging artisans from Hopi, Navajo, and Zuni tribes.
For more than 60 years, Hoel’s Indian Shop (9589 N. Arizona 89A, 928/282-3925, www.hoelsindianshop.com, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. daily) has bought directly from Native American artisans, and their first-rate inventory is a testament to this tradition. The shop specializes in Native American arts and crafts, including jewelry, hand-carved kachina dolls, hand-woven baskets, and Navajo rugs and blankets. The innovative pottery designs are especially rich.
