It’s rather simple to be considered well dressed and fashionable in the Steel City, a place where nearly half the populace seems to don football or hockey jerseys during game days. As far as practical clothing is concerned, packing for a trip to Pittsburgh is really a matter of simply checking the upcoming week’s weather forecast. And should you forget an essential item, just about anything can be purchased upon arrival.

The prudent packer, however, should take care to bring the following: a compact umbrella, as sudden showers can take place during any season; comfortable and sensible walking shoes (if arriving in wet or snowy weather, you’ll want waterproof shoes—preferably cross-trainers—with a decent tread); sunglasses, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat during the summer months; and, if you plan to attend any of the events or festivals at Point State Park, a sweater or light jacket, as breezes coming off the rivers can sometimes make for chilly evenings.

Summer visitors might also consider packing swimwear, as public pools, the Youghiogheny River, and Sandcastle Waterpark are all popular warm-weather diversions. Winter visitors should bring tight-fitting thermal underwear (long-sleeved tops and bottoms are best), insulated gloves or mittens, and a wool scarf and beanie-style cap.
