Bosque Estatal de Río Abajo (Carr. 621, km 4.4, just west of Hwy. 10, 787/880-6557 or 787/724- 3724) is a 5,000-acre mostly subtropical humid forest in the heart of Puerto Rico’s karst country, spanning the municipalities of Utuado and Arecibo. Once heavily deforested by industry, the reserve was founded in 1943 and continues to undergo reforestation efforts.

Bosque Estatal de Río Abajo is home to 175 endangered plant species, 47 of which are in danger of extinction, and 34 species of birds. Although it is not open to the public, the forest contains an aviary where the indigenous Puerto Rican parrot is raised in captivity and released in hopes of restoring the endangered species to the island habitat.

Recreational facilities include 24 hiking trails, campgrounds, and bare-bones cabins available for rent. Camping permits and guided tours can be arranged by calling 787/724-3724.
