Luquillo is renowned for its breathtakingly beautiful public beach, most commonly referred to as Playa Luquillo, although its proper name is Balneario La Monserrate. Many consider this the finest beach on the main island, and its proximity to San Juan makes it one of the most popular among visitors.
Unfortunately, Luquillo’s town center has undergone a recent renovation that has transformed its uncommonly large plaza into a modernist concrete pad with nary a tree in sight. There’s little reason to tarry here, except to stop by Victor’s Place for a stellar seafood meal.
Instead, head over to the coastal side of town, where you’ll find great swimming, surfing, and the island’s popular array of kiosks selling fabulous fried fare for a pittance.
