Seafood and Steak

If you get your fill of seafood in Vieques, Island Steakhouse (Crow’s Nest Guesthouse, Carr. 201, km 1.1, Isabel Segunda, 787/741-0033 or 877/276-9763, fax 787/741-1294, thenest [at] coqui [dot] net, www.crowsnestvieques.com, Fri.–Tues. 6–10 p.m., $8–27) is ready to serve your carnivorous needs: filet, sirloin, rib eye, porterhouse, churrasco—you name it, the place has got it. But non–meat-eaters aren’t overlooked: The menu also features whole lobster, fried shrimp, and salmon.

Chez Shack (Carr. 995, km 1.8, 787/741-2175, Mon. and Wed.–Sat. 5:30–10 p.m., $12–30) really is a shack. It’s constructed of tacked-up sheets of corrugated metal strung with twinkle lights and surrounded by thick forest, but folks flock here for good food and the steel-drum band. The kitchen has been undergoing some changes in its management and the type of cuisine it serves, and the hours seem to vary from week to week. But everyone swears by the excellent food and convivial mood of this bohemian eatery.
