The downscale Hotel Punta de Mita (Hidalgo 5, Fracc. E. Zapata, tel. 329/291-6269, www.hotelpuntamita.com) overlooks the bay in Emiliano Zapata. Here, what you see is what you get: about 15 small, plain motel-style rooms around an inviting kid-friendly grassy pool patio. Rates run about $35 per room, with air-conditioning, bunk bed for children, and small kitchenette.
Informal tent camping and RV parking around Punta Mita is possible when not prohibited by the government because of local construction; ask at the Playa Anclote restaurants if it’s okay to camp under big trees at either end of the beach. Stores nearby and on the highway in Emiliano Zapata (commonly known as Punta Mita) a quarter-mile east can furnish the necessities, including drinking water.
