Bread and Pastries
Excellent locally baked bread is a delightful surprise to many first-time Puerto Vallarta visitors. Small bakeries everywhere put out trays of hot, crisp-crusted bolillos (rolls) and sweet panes dulces (pastries). The pastries vary from simple cakes, muffins, cookies, and doughnuts to fancy fruit-filled turnovers and puffs. Half the fun occurs before the eating: perusing the goodies, tongs in hand, and picking out the most scrumptious. With your favorite dozen or two finally selected, you take your tray to the cashier, who deftly bags everything up and collects a few pesos ($2–3) for your entire mouthwatering selection.
