Most entertainments in Barra and Melaque are informal and local. Corridas de toros (bullfights) are occasionally held during the winter–spring season at the bullring on Highway 200 across from the Barra turnoff. Local vaqueros (cowboys) sometimes display their pluck in spirited charreadas (Mexican-style rodeos) in neighboring country villages. Check with your hotel desk or the Barra tourist information office for details.
The big local festival occurs in Melaque during the St. Patrick’s Day week of March 10–17. Events include blessing of the local fishing fleet, folk dancing, cake eating, and boxing matches.
