Founded in 1992, the Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde, headquartered in Puerto Vallarta, has been instrumental in rescuing the Puerto Vallarta region’s sea turtle populations from the brink of extinction.
Spurred on by a dedicated cadre of volunteers, the organization’s San Pancho chapter has led the effort, by working to increase the San Pancho Olive Ridley nesting turtle population tenfold, from about 70 to 700 active yearly nests in five years.
The San Pancho chapter (Calle America Latina 102, tel. 311/258-4100, www.project-tortuga.org) welcomes volunteers.
