Nearly 25,000 students use this campus, which sprawls for blocks beyond the old core bounded by Central Avenue and University Boulevard. Visitors can park in a complex just inside the UNM campus across from Cornell Street; the info center, where you can pick up a detailed map, is in the southwest corner of the structure.

Just across the way, the University Art Museum (Center for the Arts, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Fri., 1–4 p.m. Sun.) displays treasures from the permanent fine-art collection of more than 30,000 pieces from all over the globe.

Wandering around the grounds, you’ll see such classic Meem buildings as Mesa Vista Hall (now the Student Services Building) and Zimmerman Library.

Rest up at the bucolic duck pond and then head for the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology (off University Blvd., north of M. L. K. Jr. Blvd., 505/277-4405, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Fri., 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat., free), a Meem building originally used as the student union. The museum has a particularly good overview of Southwestern Indian culture and a collection of Native American artifacts from university-sponsored digs all over the state.
