Telephone and Internet
Albuquerque and Santa Fe use the area code 505, while Taos numbers (and most of the rest of the state) start with 575—this is a relatively recent split, effective as of January 2009, so businesses may not have updated their information.
Mobile phones on the GSM network (Cingular, T-Mobile) get very poor or no reception in rural areas, though this is steadily improving. The corridor between Albuquerque and Santa Fe is fine, but if you’ll be spending a lot of time outside of these two cities, you might consider a CDMA phone (Verizon is reliable).
Internet access is widespread, and many cafés have wireless networks. But thick adobe walls and chicken wire inside faux-adobe walls conspire against the wireless waves, so hotels can have erratic service, if they have it at all. There are not many Internet cafés with computers for public use; when in doubt, head to the public library.
