Genoveva Chavez Community Center (3221 Rodeo Rd., 505/955-4001, www.gccommunitycenter.com, 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 5:30 a.m.– 8 p.m. Fri., 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Sat., 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Sun., $5) is the city’s biggest recreational facility, with a large swimming pool with a slide and a separate lap pool (both are indoors); basketball and racquetball courts; a fully equipped gym; and a year-round ice rink.
In the winter, there’s also a small ice-skating pond at Hyde Memorial State Park (505/983-7175), seven miles northeast of town on the way to the ski area.
