Nicholas Potter, Bookseller (211 E. Palace Ave., 505/983-5434, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun.) is a rambling bungalow packed to the rafters with books—a few dog-eared paperbacks, but mostly rare hardbacks. It’s eminently browsable, with an owner who knows his stuff.

Snowden’s (333 Montezuma St., 505/820-2665, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat.) specializes in Native American and Southwestern titles.

Western history buffs will love Dumont Maps and Books of the West (314 McKenzie St., 505/986-6114, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat., also noon–5 p.m. Sun. July and Aug.), where first-edition true tales of cowboy life are stacked up against New Mexico travel brochures from the 1920s.

Garcia Street Books (376 Garcia St., 505/986-0151, 9:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.) caters to broader interests, and many of the finds in its antiquarian editions (particularly strong on art) are just as juicy.
