Bluffton

Similar to Beaufort, except even quieter and smaller, Bluffton is an idyllic village on the banks of the wide, hypnotically serene, and well-preserved May River.

Despite its friendly, open ways today, Bluffton was the original hotbed of secession, with Charleston diarist Mary Chesnut famously referring to the town as “the center spot of the fire eaters.”

A fairly new event happens each October in Bluffton, the Arts & Seafood Festival (www.blufftonartsandseafoodfestival.com). The emphasis is on locally harvested shrimp and oysters. A 5K run is featured on Saturday morning, with Sunday bringing a traditional Blessing of the Fleet ceremony on the river.
