The place to see indie film in Columbia is at the The Nickelodeon (937 Main St., 803/254-3433 www.nickelodeon.org, $7.50 non-members, $4.50 members) downtown next to the University of South Carolina campus. Run by the non-profit Columbia Film Society, a year’s membership here costs $30 and gets you discounted admission. They hold various tiny film festivals here throughout the year, including the “Indie Grits” festival (Apr.), a Native American festival (Nov.), Latin festival (Sept.–Oct.), African American festival (Jan.–Feb.), and Jewish festival (Mar.–Apr.).
Otherwise, you need to go to the suburban multiplexes for movie action, such as Regal Sandhill Stadium 16 (450 Town Center Pl., 803/736-1811) or Regal Columbiana Grande Stadium 14 (1250 Bower Pwy., 803/407-9898) out at the Columbiana Mall, off I-26 a little ways north of town.
