Francis Marion’s main homestead, Pond Bluff near Eutawville, now lies submerged under the waters of Lake Marion. But you can pay your respects to the Swamp Fox without scuba gear. The final resting place of Marion and his wife is on the old Belle Isle Plantation Cemetery, on Highway 45 between Highway 6 and Eadytown, and is open daily during daylight hours.
Be aware that this is only a cemetery with a historic marker, and there are no facilities.
His tombstone reads in part: “History will record his worth, and rising generations embalm his memory, as one of the most distinguished Patriots and Heroes of the American Revolution: which elevated his native Country to honor and independence and secured to her the blessings of liberty and peace.”
