Located in a building faced dramatically with white marble and designed by New York architect Edward Larabee Barnes, the Knoxville Museum of Art (1050 World’s Fair Park Dr., 865/525-6101, www.knoxart.org, Tues.–Thurs. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Fri. 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Sun. 1–5 p.m., adults $5, 17 and under free) is Knoxville’s preeminent visual arts institution.

Originally called the Dulin Gallery of Art and located in an early 20th-century mansion, the Knoxville Museum of Art moved to the World’s Fair Park after the 1982 World’s Fair. The current structure opened in 1990.

The museum has five galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden, gift shop, and exploratory gallery for children. From the rear of the great hall visitors can step outside on the museum balcony for views of the World’s Fair Park and downtown Knoxville. The museum’s growing permanent collection is bolstered by numerous visiting exhibitions. On Friday evening the museum hosts Alive After Five, with jazz performances.

Admission to the museum is free on Tuesday.
