Founded in 1929 and displaying the elegant Spanish colonial architecture of a more civilized age, Hacienda del Sol gets my vote for the best foothills resort—not because it’s the most inclusive or ritzy, but because it reflects more than any other local accommodations (save perhaps the Arizona Inn) the beauty and rustic-chic of the high-style Southwest of yesteryear
Each of the rooms at Hacienda del Sol ($109–515 d depending on the season) is distinctive, with custom-made furniture and a story all its own. The small, comparatively inexpensive Historic Rooms look out on the enchanting courtyard, with an inviting outdoor pool and hot tub.
Like its younger foothills neighbors, this resort has a full-service spa, an excellent New American restaurant, a wonderful patio bar, riding stables, and more.
