Right across from the information center, and drawing tourists like a magnet, is Sam’s Deli (805 Government St., 250/382-8424, daily 7:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m., lunches $6.50–9). Many places nearby have better food, but Sam’s boasts a superb location and a casual, cheerful atmosphere that makes it perfect for families. The ploughman’s lunch, a staple of English pub dining, costs $9.50, while sandwiches (shrimp and avocado is an in-house feature) range $6.50–9, and salads are all around $7–12.
Touristy Wharfside Eatery (1208 Wharf St., 250/360-1808, daily for lunch and dinner, $16–31) is a bustling waterfront complex with a maritime theme and family atmosphere. Behind a small café section and a bar is the main dining room and a two-story deck, where almost every table has a stunning water view. Seafood starters to share include a tasting plate of salmon and mussels steamed in a creamy tomato broth. The lunchtime appetizer menu runs through to the evening menu, which also includes wood-fired pizza ($20–24 for two people), standard seafood dishes, and a delicious prawn and pesto linguini. The cheesecake is heavenly.
