Women are sometimes the target of harassment in the Virgin Islands, and women traveling alone should always be aware of their surroundings. Don’t walk alone at night in town, and certainly don’t try to catch a ride alone at any time. Catcalls, often in the form of a hiss, are common.
Women dining or drinking alone are a prime target for harassment. Bring a book and develop a very cold demeanor if you really want to be left alone. Likewise, a woman alone on the dance floor is a magnet for men. Often, it seems like it does not matter how many times you tell a man you do not want to dance with him. This can easily spoil a night of dancing. Some men consider all female visitors to be in the market for a steamy West Indian vacation romance. If you’re not, don’t let anyone think you are.
