At White Bay Campground (White Bay, 284/495-9358 or 284/495-9312, www.ivanscampground.com) guests sleep steps away from the best beach on the island. The campground is well maintained and perfectly low-key. It offers a choice of bare campsites (you bring the tent), large canvas tents (already equipped with beds and linens), and charming, simple wooden cabins (equipped with bed, linens, electricity, and a light). Expect to pay about $20 for a bare site, $40 for a tent, and $65–75 or more for a cabin. Discounts are available in the summer.

Campground guests can use the community kitchen (simple but adequate for basic meal preparation) and a shared bathhouse. The campground kitchen, office, and honor bar are decorated with seashells, island fliers, and photos left by previous guests. The aptly named Stress Free Bar on the premises serves lunch most days.

Campers are vulnerable to the scourge of insects, but good strong insect repellent, mosquito coils, and vigilance in keeping your cabin door or tent flaps closed will prevent these pests from ruining your vacation. Keep in mind that dry weather and wind keep mosquitoes at bay. Sand flies, tiny gnat-like nuisances, come out around sunrise and sunset.
