About halfway down the East End Road, past Coral Bay, are the beach houses at 
Estate Zootenvaal (Hurricane Hole, 340/776-6321, www.estatezootenvaal.com, $275–550 winter, $180–360 summer). The setting is serene—the sound of the gentle surf is about the only noise around—and the cottages are unpretentious yet comfortable. Seagreen, peach, and white walls complement the bright greens and blues of the gardens and sea outside. Accommodations include two one-bedroom cottages and one two-bedroom apartment, each with a full kitchen and large screened-in porch. There are no televisions. The property faces the south shore of St. John and offers walking trails and a lovely bay for beachcombing. Good swimming beaches are a 10-minute drive away.
