The leader in Caribbean cuisine is Morgan’s Mango (340/693-8141, 5:30–10 p.m., $10–32), a cute, inviting restaurant on the waterfront about halfway to Mongoose Junction. Dishes on the menu are labeled according to their island of origin and include Cuban, Jamaican, Haitian, and Virgin Island specialties. Seafood is handled well here, and there are vegetarian options. The salads are huge and filling. Live music is on tap Tuesday and Thursday nights.

On Centerline Road, about two miles outside of Cruz Bay, is one of the best choices for West Indian food on St. John. Windy Level Bar and Restaurant (Centerline Rd., 340/715-2000, Mon.–Sat. 6:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m., $10–20) is named for the cool breezes that pass through the spacious dining room. Chef and owner Carryn Powell offers a changing menu of local specialties, such as fish, conch, pork chops, and baked chicken, each served with generous helpings of rice, macaroni, coleslaw, and other side dishes. Think soul food café, with a Caribbean twist. The Windy Level is in a maroon-and-peach-painted home and has nice ocean views. In true island style, the service is slow but friendly.
