You’ll find several hotels in town to choose from, starting with Duck Brand Hotel (509/996-2192 or 800/996-2192, www.methownet.com/duck, $69–79 s or d) in downtown Winthrop over the restaurant of the same name. The six clean but simple rooms come with private baths, and most also have balconies.
The pet-friendly Winthrop Inn (960 Hwy. 20, 509/996-2217 or 800/444-1972, www.winthropinn.com, $75–90 s or $85–95 d) has clean and comfortable rooms with microwaves and fridges, sharing a small outdoor pool and hot tub. Munch on fresh muffins and coffee each morning while checking your email through the free wireless Internet. Winter guests and mountain bikers will be pleased to note that there’s a trailhead just two blocks away.
Snow lovers should also consider a stay at Chewack River Guest Ranch (588 E. Chewuch Rd., 509/996-2497, $85 d, $225 up to 6), six miles north of Winthrop. Owned by avid snowmobilers, this establishment rents out snowmobiles and can also arrange guided trips. Chewack is also a great summertime retreat, particularly for horse lovers—guests can board their steeds for free here, and the property sits right next to public land with miles of trails. Choose between several lodge rooms or rent the ranch house with a full kitchen and a wood-burning stove. Finish the day off soaking in the hot tub or cooking up a dinner on the outdoor stone barbecue.
Three-quarters of a mile south of Winthrop, Winthrop Mountain View Chalets (509/996-2191 or 888/996-2525, www.winthropchalets.com, $55 to $95 s or d) rents out cute little cabins built for two. They come equipped with kitchenettes and decks and share access to a large hot tub.
Several cozy lodges dot the valley around Winthrop, including Brown’s Farm Inn (Wolf Creek Rd., 509/996-2571, www.methownet.com/brownsfarm, $80–95 d, or $10 per additional guest), nestled into tranquil corner of the Methow Valley eight miles west of Winthrop. Two of the cabins have kitchenettes and sleep four, while the third has a full kitchen and sleeps up to 10. Big supporters of the local trail system, the family owners will happily show you great hiking, biking, or cross-country skiing destinations within the vicinity.
