A multitude of hiking trails surround the Methow Valley. For horseback rides and pack trips, contact Early Winters Outfitters (509/996-2659 or 800/737-8750, www.earlywintersoutfitting.com), Rocking Horse Ranch (509/996-2768), Chewack River Riding Stables (509/996-2497), or North Cascade Outfitters (509/997-1015, www.cowboypoet.com).
The 578-acre Pearrygin Lake State Park (five miles north of Winthrop, www.parks.wa.gov) offers a sandy beach for swimming, plus fishing, camping, a boat launch, store, and boat rentals. This small spring-fed, glacially carved lake is a delightful break from the dry summer hills of sage and pine that surround it.
