Edmonds Underwater Park

Edmonds is home to one of the premier diving sites within the Seattle metropolitan area. Just offshore from Brackett’s Landing and the ferry terminal lies the very first underwater park ever established in Washington, Edmonds Underwater Park. The artificial reef was formed in 1935 when municipal leaders sank a 300-foot DeLion dry dock to act as a breakwater.

Since then the marine environment has claimed the DeLion, as it has with the other ships and debris dropped into the watery depths in order to build up the reef.

Today, divers can explore the underwater, rope-lined “streets” that have been developed over the years to help them navigate the park. Observant divers should be able to find dozens of species of fish, crustaceans, and marine vegetation that thrive here.

You can fill your tanks, rent diving equipment, learn to dive, or find a dive buddy at Underwater Sports (264 Railroad Ave., 425/771-6322), two blocks south across the street from the Amtrak depot.
