Literally a stone’s throw from the Mount Rainier National Park entrance, Stone Creek Cabins (38624 Hwy. 706 E., 360/569-2355 or 800/678-3942, www.destination-rainier.com/stone, $115–150) offers some of the best bargain cabins in Ashford. You can’t beat the location, and the cabins themselves are modern, hip-roofed cedar cottages with kitchenettes and fireplaces on lightly wooded grounds.

Also near the park entrance, but not nearly as nice, Gateway Inn Motel (38820 Hwy. 706 E, 360/569-2506, $109–149) works for those in a pinch during the high season or just stopping over for the night. The cabin interiors are spacious and clean, but dated—in a late 1960s kind of way. But they all have fireplaces and the staff is friendly.
