The 50,923-acre Norse Peak Wilderness reaches north from Highway 410 and just west of the Crystal Mountain Ski Area and covers rocky ridges, steep valleys, and forests of Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock.

The Pacific Crest Trail climbs across the backbone of these ridges for approximately 27 miles from Government Meadow (accessible via Forest Road 70) on the north end, to Highway 410 near Chinook Pass on the south end. Along the way it cruises over high ridges, including two that top 6,400 feet; a popular side path leads to the summit of 6,856-foot Norse Peak for extraordinary views across to Mt. Rainier.

The Fifes Peaks area on the east side of Norse Peak Wilderness is popular with rock climbers, but the rock can be weak in places. Some of the easiest access to the Pacific Crest Trail comes from near the Crystal Mountain Ski Area. Several paths leave from this area, including the Silver Creek Trail (No. 1192) and Bullion Basin Trail (No. 1156), both of which reach the PCT in a bit over two miles of hiking.

For a short hike with excellent views of Mt. Rainier, head 32 miles east from Enumclaw on Highway 410 to Corral Pass Road (No. 7174), and follow it seven miles to a parking area just before the Corral Pass Campground. From here, the appropriately named Rainier View Trail climbs for a mile to a 6,080-foot ridge overlooking the mountain. This is a popular camping place, but carry water since none is available at the ridge.

The trail continues beyond this, connecting with the Castle Mountain Trail, 2.2 miles from your starting point. An additional five miles of hiking brings you to the Pacific Crest Trail near Martinson Gap. Check with the Forest Service for the condition of Castle Mountain Trail; at last check it was difficult to follow.
