East to Mossyrock
A pullout four miles east of Mossyrock leads to a viewpoint offering a glimpse—on clear days—of Mount St. Helens, 24 miles to the south. The Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery is on the Cowlitz River just below the Mayfield Lake dam, providing a good chance to watch salmon returning up a fish ladder in the spring and fall. Get there by following the signs from the Highway 12 turnoff, nine miles west of Mossyrock.
Mayfield Lake County Park (180 Beach Rd., 360/985-2364), off Highway 12 just west of Mossyrock, has a campground (open May–Sept.), swimming beach, boat launch, small picnic area, and playground. Follow the highway east to Mossyrock—there’s a nice roadside viewpoint about three miles east of town.
