Vashon Island has a number of delightfully romantic B&Bs and guest cottages, making this a great weekend getaway.

Families traveling with pets will feel comfortable in one of seven cottages rented out by Swallow’s Nest Guest Cottages (6030 SW 248th St., 206/463-2646 or 800/269-6378, www.vashonislandcottages.com, $105–125 d). These private properties are scattered about the island.

Set on five acres with flower gardens and ponds, Artist’s Studio Loft (16529 91st S.W., 206/463-2583, www.asl-bnb.com, $119–215 d, two-night minimum on weekends) has four private suites with separate entrances, a hot tub, woodstove, and a big continental breakfast.

Once the home of the well-known children’s author, Betty MacDonald Farm (12000 99th Ave. SW, 206/567-4227 or 888/328-6753, www.bettymacdonaldfarm.com, $125–160 d) is now a tastefully romantic B&B just a few blocks from the ferry dock. The big old barn sits on six acres atop a bluff facing Mt. Rainier and has a spacious upper loft with kitchen and woodstove. A separate cottage is popular with families. The fridges are well stocked for a make-your-own breakfast.

Set within a converted country church built in 1917, the appropriately named Angels of the Sea B&B (Dockton Harbor, 206/463-6980 or 800/798-9249, www.angelsofthesea.com, $150 s or d) has three guest rooms with a shared or private bath. Guests are treated to live harp music during breakfast, and kids are welcome.
