On the northern edge of Federal Way, also on the Sound, is the community of Des Moines. The city marina is one of the largest in the area. Nearby is a 670-foot fishing pier that provides great views of the mountains for anglers and strollers. To the north of the pier is the Des Moines Beach Park, a 20-acre park with Des Moines Creek, to which salmon return each year.
Several public swimming pools are in the area, but the star attraction is the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center (650 S.W. Campus Dr., 253/927-5173), constructed to host the 1990 Goodwill Games and used for other national swimming meets. You don't have to be a hotshot to swim here, or to try out the diving boards.
The North Shore Golf & Country Club (4101 North Shore Blvd. NE, 253/927-1375 or 800/447-1375, www.northshoregc.net) is an 18-hole public course.
