Hikers and cyclists should be sure to check out the excellent Centennial Trail, a nearly level paved path that extends 60 miles along the river from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to the confluence of the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers in Riverside State Park.
Swim at one of more than half a dozen outdoor pools around Spokane; call the city’s parks and rec department (509/625-6960) for details. In winter, visit the YWCA (W. 829 Broadway, 509/326-1190) indoor pool. More swimming can be had at Liberty Lake, near the Idaho border. Contact Wiley E. Waters White Water Rafting (888/502-1900, www.riverrafting.net) for nearby white-water rafting opportunities on the Spokane River.
The local REI store (1125 N. Monroe, 509/328-9900) has all sorts of classes and guides trips throughout the year. They also rent a range of camping and other outdoor gear.
Wild Walls (202 W. Sprague, 509/455-9596) has an indoor rock-climbing wall with instruction and gear rentals.
Enjoy a trail ride with Indian Canyon Riding Stable at Indian Canyon Park (4812 W. Canyon Dr., 509/624-4646). Rockin’ B Ranch (509/891-9016) has a chuck wagon barbecue and cowboy singing at Liberty Lake, near the Idaho border.
