EXPLORE Austin, San Antonio & The Hill Country: San Antonio
HemisFair Park

HemisFair Park

One landmark event that put San Antonio on the map was the city’s hosting of the World’s Fair in 1968. The fair coincided with the city’s 250th anniversary, and people saw this as an opportunity to boost San Antonio’s profile as a world-class destination by pulling off a dramatic fair. Thus, HemisFair Park was created. Once the fair was over the city was left with some amazing features that were wisely preserved, such as the Institute of Texan Cultures, the Tower of the Americas, the water gardens, and the Schultz House Cottage Garden. In 1990 a children’s playground was added that includes a wood-and-sand playground. HemisFair Park is located downtown, adjacent to the Convention Center. Parking is available off Bowie Street to the east of the park.
