Those on a tight schedule who want a broad introduction to Panama can see the capital, the canal, and the hottest highland and beach destinations in less than two weeks. This would be a jam-packed trip with little down time, but because these are popular destinations, there are good travel connections between them. Don’t be surprised, however, if you wish you had more time in every place, particularly Boquete and Bocas.

DAY 1
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport and transfer to a Panama City hotel.

DAY 2
Visit the Spanish ruins of Panamá la Vieja and take a walking tour of Casco Viejo. Splurge on dinner at one of Panama City’s better restaurants.

DAY 3
Visit the Panama Canal, particularly Miraflores Locks, Gaillard Cut, and the Gamboa area. Stop by the Amador Causeway in the morning or evening to admire the view and stretch the legs.

DAY 4
Take the early-morning train across the isthmus and explore the Spanish ruins of Portobelo and Fuerte San Lorenzo as well as Gatún Locks. Those who plan to be in Panama City on a Saturday can opt instead for a day-transit of the canal. Return to Panama City at the end of the day.

DAYS 5–6
Fly to David and transfer to a Boquete hotel. A quick visit might include either a hike in search of quetzals or a white-water rafting trip.

DAYS 7–8
Return to David early in the morning and fly to Bocas del Toro. Stay at a hotel in Bocas town, exploring the town the first evening and going for a boating and snorkeling trip to Cayo Crawl, Swan’s Cay, and Boca del Drago the next morning.

DAY 9
Fly back to Panama City for last-minute shopping and sightseeing.

DAY 10
Transfer to Tocumen International Airport for the flight home.
