One of Mendoza [1]’s most convenient wineries is Godoy Cruz’s Bodega Escorihuela, about a half-hour walk or a short bus or cab ride from downtown. At Escorihuela’s founding in 1884, Godoy Cruz was the boonies, but Gran Mendoza gradually surrounded this full-block facility, whose vineyards are scattered throughout the province.
Escorihuela produces the dry but fruity white viognier and reds including malbec, Syrah, and a cabernet-malbec blend. Its courtyard is also home to celebrity chef Francis Mallman’s renowned restaurant 1884, one of Argentina’s top dining experiences.
In late 2008, however, Bodega Escorihuela (Belgrano 1188, Godoy Cruz, tel. 0261/424-2744, www.escorihuela.com.ar [2]) suffered a major fire; reconstruction is underway, but tours are on hold as of press time.
