Argentines and especially porteños (like New Yorkers) have a stereotyped reputation for brusqueness. Still, politeness goes a long way with officials, shopkeepers, and others with whom you may have contact. Always offer the appropriate polite greeting: buenos días (good morning), buenas tardes (good afternoon), or buenas noches (good evening or good night).
In terms of general conduct, both women and men should dress inconspicuously when visiting churches, chapels, and sacred sites. This again is an issue of respect for local customs, even if Argentines themselves don’t always observe it.
