The enormous Boom Boom Room (Guaymas, northern end of the malecón [1], across the footbridge that leads to the Shrine of Guadalupe, no tel., noon–3 A.M. daily) features a high-tech sound system and stunning views.
For a less caffeinated experience, grab a drink at the relatively quiet Club Miramar (Av. Mar de Cortés, tel. 686/577-1192, 10 A.M.–3 A.M. daily), a San Felipe classic at the north end of the malecón.
To get away from the crowds, head south of the malecón to the Hotel El Cortez’s Barefoot Bar (tel. 686/577-1055) and enjoy the tranquil view of the sea over a cold margarita.
February and March are busy months on the San Felipe [2] events calendar. Like Ensenada [3] and La Paz [4], San Felipe celebrates Carnaval, usually in late February or early March. The Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 off-road race take place in March.
U.S. college students take over the town during the latter part of March for spring break. Steer clear unless you want to partake in the madness.
June 1 brings the national Navy Day (Día de la Marina Nacional); the celebration includes a street festival with live music and dancing.
