It takes about 15 hours to drive the 1,124 kilometers from El Rosario [1] to La Paz [2].
The stretch from El Rosario to Parador Punta Prieta is 240 kilometers, and this marks the turnoff to Bahía de los Angeles [3]. From there, it’s another 68 kilometers (about an hour of driving time) to the coast.
It’s a good idea to stock up on supplies in El Rosario before making the trek across the desert, but after Km. 115, a number of ranchos along the highway operate small restaurants, where you can sample a plate of basic Mexican fare.
Mission Velicatá [4] is an easy excursion off Mexico 1. Allow a couple of days to explore the Valle de los Cirios and three or four days for Bahía de los Angeles—longer if you are going there to dive, fish, or windsurf/kiteboard. Add another day for a side trip to San Borja [5].
